The Origins of Sic Bo
Sic Bo can be traced back to the ancient Chinese warriors who used to play a game with pieces of carved bone or stone which were thrown around inside their rice bowls. This game they played as a recreational activity in between their fighting and training when they sat for meals, hence the other less popular name for the game; Rice Bowl of Three Dice. Originally the warriors would take pieces of stone or bone and carve numbers or symbols on the sides of the bone and stone. Bets were placed on the outcome of shaking these pieces of bone inside two rice bowls. Throughout the centuries the game developed and soon the bone and stones were replaced with bricks which had numbers carved on them.
The Original Names of Sic Bo
The origins of the name Sic Bo comes from the two bricks that were used, which actually means dice pair or dice bowl. Over the years and throughout Asia different names were adopted for this game of bricks, the bricks soon developed into what we now know to be modern day dice. The names of Sic Bo range from Tai Siu which means lucky dice to Dai Siu, a name used in Macau which means Big Small. This refers to the types of bets that can be made on the modern day betting grid. In fact many of the names of Sic Bo refer to only two dice being used in the game but as we know Sic Bo today, three dice are used.
Sic Bo Travels from East to West
Sic Bo has always been a casino game that is closely linked to China and Asia. Even in modern brick casinos you can find Sic Bo advertised at the Asian games corner. Many casinos still show examples of the original “bricks” that were shaken in between a plate and a rice bowl but today more modern techniques and digital shakers are used to shake the dice. Although the origins of Sic Bo in America began in the early 20th Century with the Chinese immigrants, a similar version was already being played in England and Europe known as Grand Hazard or Chuck a Luck.
Dice Games like Sic Bo
Dice games have always been a popular past time from the early records of the Chinese warriors to the Roman conquerors that used to play Hazard while waiting to storm castles. Dice games are based on pure luck and there is not much skill involved although casino owners used to have to watch out for loaded dice, today all the games are played digitally and it is very difficult to cheat. It was once believed that the roll of the dice was a direct outcome of the decision of the gods and therefore players were at the mercy of a higher being, today it is based on pure luck.
Sic Bo Today
Considering that the origins of Sic Bo go as far back as Ancient China and maybe even before then, it is a game that has weathered well. Today you can find Sic Bo in many modern casinos in addition to its widespread accessibility over the internet. Sic Bo has become more popular due to the internet and of course the gimmicky table in casinos that light up the winning numbers. Although it is a game based on luck, there is the change for some nice wins especially if you land a triple or double number.
